What do you think of “User Experience”?

your mum ux are “User Experience” specialists. We live and breathe all things UX but we’re keen to know what non-UX people think about it all.

Is it a load of old tosh or does it provide you with valuable insight?

We’d be really grateful if you could spare a couple of minutes to take part in our short online survey.

B2B websites – 5 thing to think about

I am often asked by B2B clients to give my opinion on their websites; usuaully they want no more than a 60 minute glance at what they have and a quick idea of what could be improved.

My suggestions vary from site to site and client to client but there are some common fixes that are worthy of note.

So, the next time you’re  tinkering with your b2b website here are 5 things to think about:

10 steps to establishing and maintaining a professional blog

It’s been a while since my last blog article. I could say I have been busy and haven’t had time to think about our blog. I could say that, and it would be true, but surely it’s no excuse.

My recent inactivity has raised a few questions for me: How can I keep the blog going? How can I continue to produce good quality content, frequently and indefinitely? Perhaps more importantly, should I even bother continuing if I can’t find the time to update it?

11 ways to improve an online shop

Smashing Magazine recently posted an article discussing 15 common mistakes in ecommerce design, and that got us thinking. This is a subject close to our hearts – we have helped many of our clients increase their online sales – and we think we’re quite well placed to talk about making improvements.

There isn’t really a “One size fits all” approach to increasing online conversion. We always recommend our client establish detailed web analytics that allow them to see exactly what users do at each stage of the buying process and employ methods for gathering insight into why they behave the way they do (e.g. user testing, focus groups, online surveys).

We also recommend a “suck it and see” approach; we encourage our clients to make incremental changes and to use techniques like MVT and A/B testing to monitor the effectiveness of each change.

That said, we thought we’d have a bash at our own top tips on how to improve the user experience and bottom line…

Five tips for creating your CRM and social media strategy

A proper CRM and social media strategy needs serious head scratching and furious scribbling. We normally discuss this sort of thing in a big room with a white board, a stack of post its and an endless supply of tea and biscuits.

Not the sort of thing you can really cover in a blog post then?

No, but I thought I’d give it a go anyway…

Fix the Web asks (some of) the audience

The BBC reported today that the UK Government has launched a campaign aimed at improving the online experience for people with disabilities (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-11746150).

A new site called Fix the Web (http://www.fixtheweb.net) allows disabled and older people to report problems they find when surfing. Fix the Web has set itself the ambitious target of getting 10,000 volunteers dealing with 250,000 websites within two years.

Great news for user experience; we UX professionals are always banging on about how important it is to consult your users. The Government should be commended for their effort but I hope they have thought about the bigger UX picture:

Three top tips for the next 12 months

I was recently asked to give my three top UX tips for the next twelve months. I have a head full of ideas but when it comes to picking three that I think are the best and most relevant to other people, I have to admit I struggled.

I persevered and whittled it down to this…

  • Use social media to listen to your audience
  • Use UX techniques to reduce project costs
  • Use Agile to make sure your projects remain relevant

How to carry out user discussions and testing

Of course you can rely on your own assumptions about what you should be doing online. Afterall, it’s your business, who knows it better than you?

That may be true but it wouldn’t hurt to spend even a small amount of your time on budget asking real people what they think. You will gain valuable insight, even if they only validate you had the right idea in the first place.

And so what if they tell you what you already know? If you’re having a medical check up, do you ask the doctor for your money back when he gives you the all clear?

So how do you carry out user discussions and testing …?

Using the internet for research and analysis

The internet is a very effective research tool so use it wisely to learn what you should offer your audience:

  • How does your site perform against usability best practice?
  • How can social media and other off-site activity be used to your benefit?
  • What are the competition doing well and what they are doing badly?
  • What do your audience think about you and your online presence?
  • What online conversations and search terms are most important and relevant to you?

The simple answer is “Look around you”…

Stakeholder workshops – talk to your people

When starting a new digital project and you want to know what direction to take the first and simplest thing to do is talk to the people you work with.

This could be the people in your department, people from other departments who have a vested interest in what you’re doing or even trusted suppliers and clients.

I suggest you arrange a time, get everyone into a room and get them to share their ideas…
